Magnus Carlsen secured his record-extending seventh Norway Chess title in Stavanger after Indian Grandmaster D Gukesh lost to Fabiano Caruana in a dramatic final-round encounter. Carlsen, the defending champion, finished with 16 points, edging out Caruana (15.5) and Gukesh (14.5) in the closely fought event.Gukesh, who had been in contention for the title, faced immense pressure in his final game against 2018 champion Caruana. Carlsen, meanwhile, drew his final round game against Arjun Erigaisi from an unfavourable position to seal the championship.This marks the second time Gukesh has finished third in as many appearances at the prestigious event, while Erigaisi wrapped up his campaign in fifth place with 12.5 points.In the women’s section, Ukraine’s Anna Muzychuk emerged as the champion with 16.5 points, despite losing the Armageddon tie-break to India’s R Vaishali in the final round. A draw in the classical game had already secured Muzychuk the title.

India’s Koneru Humpy, who needed Muzychuk to lose in the classical format and win her own final-round game to clinch the title, could only manage a draw against Chinese world champion Ju Wenjun. Humpy finished third with 15 points.
